Parakeets originally are from the grasslands of Australia and lived in eucalyptus trees. Native parakeets would feed on fresh greens, fruits, berries and whatever seeds that came around in the fall. Parakeets will eat seeds as their primary parakeet food but you should remember that parakeet seeds only part of the parakeet food diet. If you raise a parakeet using parakeet seed as the only parakeet food, your parakeet will probably have malnutrition. You should feed a mix diet to your parakeet of 50 percent parakeet seed, cooked rice or pasta and 45 percent fresh veggies and orange fruits and 5 percent eggs or tuna and well cooked meats. It goes without saying that human food, especially those high in salt and sugar should never be fed as parakeet food to your parakeet.

The main portion of your parakeet's diet will consist of parakeet seeds.
