Your cockatiel should be provided with a variety of nutrition from good cockatiel food. Quality cockatiel food will promote good health and make your cockatiel’s plumage healthy and beautiful. A healthy cockatiel that is fed quality cockatiel food will also help the cockatiel produce healthy and fertile eggs. Besides helping create healthy offspring, a quality cockatiel food will promote the general health of your cockatiel and allow him to live a happy and healthy life. In addition to feeding cockatiel seeds and cockatiel pellets as a cockatiel food, you should make a daily addition of some high protein cockatiel food in the form of cooked meats, eggs, veggies and fruit. Remember that the cockatiel diet and cockatiel food should not consist of just cockatiel seeds and cockatiel pellets, your cockatiel food and cockatiel’s diet needs to include vitamins and minerals for your cockatiel’s optimal health.

Cockatiel Seeds

When feeding cockatiel seeds as cockatiel food you have to ensure that your cockatiel is getting the best possible nutrition out of their cockatiel seeds. Many prepared cockatiel seed mixtures are not all that balanced and contain as few as 4 different types of seeds and nuts and your cockatiel will often pick out their favorite cockatiel seeds and eat those cockatiel seeds and leave the rest. Cockatiels tend to pick out the millet seed and sunflower seeds which are both high in fat and overeating of these types of cockatiel seeds can lead to obesity. The best way to ensure your cockatiel stays in good shape when feeding cockatiel seeds is to limit the amount of cockatiel seeds you offer. The average cockatiel will eat 1.5 to 2 teaspoons of cockatiel seeds per day.

Cockatiel Pellets

Cockatiel pellets are a great alternative to feeding cockatiel seeds. Cockatiel pellets have more vitamins and minerals than cockatiel seeds and can provide better nutrition to your birds. The problem with cockatiel pellets is simply getting your cockatiel to eat them. A cockatiel will instinctively reject food it doesn’t recognize and cockatiels are known for having a taste preference in food and will often reject cockatiel food that they just don’t like. The size of the cockatiel food is also important. A cockatiel pellet that your cockatiel thinks is too big will go uneaten until you crush the cockatiel pellet up, then your cockatiel might be tempted to try it. Experiment with different types of cockatiel pellets until you can see that your cockatiel has a preferred preference for one of them. A cockatiel will starve itself to death if it doesn’t recognize the cockatiel pellet as being a type of cockatiel food. Gradual introduction of cockatiel pellets is a known way for getting your cockatiel familiar with this kind of cockatiel food. The easiest way to get your cockatiel to eat and enjoy eating cockatiel pellets is to start them eating cockatiel pellets when they are young, therefore becoming accustom to cockatiel pellets.
