The majority of a bird’s life, especially a pet bird, is standing on their feet. By providing a good bird perch for them to rest on is of the utmost importance. A good bird perch is a bird perch that is easy to clean, comfortable for the bird, and made out of material to prevent foot problems. The correct diameter of the bird perch is also important for the bird’s feet. Bird perches can be stationary or swinging bird perches and both function pretty much the same.

When selecting a bird perch for your pet bird pay attention to what type of material the bird perch is made out of. Many bird perches are made from wood, either pressed wood or natural branches. If you use wooden dowels as a bird perch you might need to add some texture to the dowel because they are generally too smooth and don’t provide enough traction. Bird perches that are made from fiber such as sisal are also a good choice as a bird perch. The most important thing when selecting a bird perch is to make sure the bird perch material is non toxic and if your bird regularly and easily chews off pieces (if it is plastic or PVC) switch to a different type of bird perch.

Pet Bird Perches

Cleaning your pet bird perch will vary depending on the type of material your bird perch is made from. Plastic bird perches, acrylic bird perches, and PVC bird perches are easy to clean and can be washed in disinfectant. Natural branches such as manzanita bird perches and cement bird perches can be a little more difficult to clean. To clean manzanita bird perches and cement bird perches you will need a wire brush to clean the dirty areas. After cleaning your pet bird perch make sure to completely dry off the pet bird perch because wetness can cause foot problems in pet birds. The placement of your pet bird perch or bird perch should be in front of food and water dishes, so those dishes can be easily accessed by your bird. Do not place the pet bird perch or bird perch directly above the foot and water dishes because bird dropping can contaminate the food and water. Pet bird perches and bird perches should be positioned so your bird’s tail doesn’t touch the side of the cage when they are sitting on their pet bird perch or bird perch.
