Lizard Food
There are many different types of lizards available as pets, from insectivorous lizards, carnivorous lizards, and herbivorous lizards, and each type of lizards needs to be fed a certain type of lizard food.
Lizard Food – Insectivorous Lizards; Insectivorous lizards eat a wide variety of insects like flies and crickets. The lizard food you feed to these types of lizards, if it is live lizard food, should be no larger than the width of the lizard’s head to ensure easy digestion. All lizard food you feed to your insectivorous lizard should be nutrient loaded and even dusted with a calcium rich lizard supplement. Feed lizard food only what the lizard can eat within a few house and remove any uneaten lizard food.
Lizard Food – Carnivorous Lizards; Carnivorous lizards eat meat based prey and many carnivorous lizards are hunters or scavengers. The lizard food supplied to these lizards should be no larger than your lizard’s head. You should supply lizard food every few days for juvenile lizards and every 3-7 days for adults. Large lizards should be fed lizard food about every 1-2 weeks. Overfeeding lizard food can lead to obesity and a host of health related problems for your lizard.
Lizard Food – Herbivorous Lizards; Herbivorous lizards feed off of plant material and you should offer a variety of lizard food such as veggies, fruits and flowers, depending on your lizard’s species. Choose lizard food items that contain a good amount of calcium and avoid poor nutritional lizard food items such as tomatoes and cucumbers. It’s a good idea to supplement your lizard food with a calcium rich lizard supplement and offer fresh lizard food daily.
Lizard Food
Certain lizards, like baby Bearded Dragons are omnivorous and will eat plants and inset or meat lizard food items. Juvenile Bearded Dragons should be fed about 50 percent meat and 50 percent plant lizard food, but adults should be fed 70 percent vegetarian lizard food and 30 percent plant lizard food about 1-2 times a week. Offering too many insects as lizard food can cause obesity and lead to many different health problems.
