Chinchillas hate water, so giving them a conventional 'water' bath isn’t a good idea. Instead you should give them a dust bath with chinchilla dust. Placing your chinchilla in a pile of chinchilla dust may not seem like the best way to keep your chinchilla clean, but it’s the only way! Chinchilla dust will keep your chinchilla’s fur nice and soft, and although it may sound exotic, chinchilla dust is actually derived from an ordinary product: concrete!
Chinchilla Dust
Chinchilla dust helps to remove excess oils and moisture from your chinchilla’s lush fur. Not only does chinchilla dust keep your pet looking pretty and feeling great, but chinchillas also really love chinchilla dust and will roll and play in it.
It’s recommended that your chinchilla take a chinchilla bath at least twice a week and a good rule of thumb to follow is the more humid the weather the more chinchilla baths your chinchilla should get.
Chinchilla Grooming
What to give a chinchilla bath in? A chinchilla bathtub or a chinchilla bath house, of course! You don’t want to use too much chinchilla dust in your chinchilla bath tub, just enough for them to roll around and get clean, and never leave it in their habitat because they’re likely to go potty in it and then it will become contaminated.
Chinchillas also like to be brushed and groomed, and to do this any small pet brush will work as a chinchilla brush to smooth their fur and remove any mats. Use your chinchilla brush to groom your chinchilla in between chinchilla baths and remember, a clean chinchilla is a happy chinchilla!
